Introduced over 30 years ago in 1975, the BMW 3 Series has always been known as a compact luxury executive car. It picked up from the 2002 and added to the sporty coupe's fun by getting a slight power increase from a two litre engine.
During the 1980s the 3 Series became known as the car of choice for up and coming businessmen. The new 4 door styling meant it was much more accessible to those of us who wanted to get passengers in and out more easily. The fastest non "M" version was the 325is which had a beefy 2.5 litre engine that created around 170bhp.
During the 90's BMW redesigned the 3 Series into what has now slowly evolved into the current shape. They added more advanced Z-axle suspension to really help the handling and make the car even more dynamic to drive. The "Touring" versions were added in Europe which are basically estate cars, although they still had most of the performance of their saloon counterparts.
There have always been "M3" versions of the cars, and these have proved to be popular with the petrolheads among us. There is a new version coming out in 2008 which promises to be good competition for the Audi RS4 and the Golf R32. With a four litre V8 producing 420hp it looks like the M3 will be very exciting indeed.
